Generations Part 4 (Gen 26:23-28)

23 From there he went up to Beersheba.

Therefore that place was called Beersheba, because there both of them swore an oath. GEN 21:31

So Israel took his journey with all that he had and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. GEN 46:1

24 And the Lord appeared to him the same night and said, “I am the God of Abraham your father. Fear not, for I am with you and will bless you and multiply your offspring for my servant Abraham's sake.”

I will make your offspring as the dust of the earth, so that if one can count the dust of the earth, your offspring also can be counted. GEN 13:16

After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” GEN 15:1

And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. GEN 17:7

So Abraham returned to his young men, and they arose and went together to Beersheba. And Abraham lived at Beersheba. GEN 22:19

And he said, “O Lord, God of my master Abraham, please grant me success today and show steadfast love to my master Abraham.” GEN 24:12

3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and will bless you, for to you and to your offspring I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath that I swore to Abraham your father.

4 I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and will give to your offspring all these lands. And in your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, GEN 26:3-4

And he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God. EXO 3:6

I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living. MAT 22:32

Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. LUK 12:32

“I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob.” And Moses trembled and did not dare to look. ACT 7:32

26 When Abimelech went to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath his adviser and Phicol the commander of his army,

With Ahuzzath—Heb. אִחֻזַת, an expression of a collection and band, and a band is so called because the people who constitute it are held שֶׁנֶאֱחָזִין together.

With Ahuzzath his adviser—The Targum renders it “a company formed from his friends,” the “mem” meaning “from.” There are some who explain that in מֵרֵעֵהוּ the “mem” is part of the noun, just like (Jdg 14:11) “the thirty companions” (מֵרֵעִים) in the narrative of Samson—in order that the word וַאִחֻזַת should be in the construct state (the company of his friends). But it would not be a polite thing to speak thus of a king—the company of his friends—for if this were the meaning it would imply that he took with him the whole company of his friends and that he had no more than one group of friends. For this reason it should be interpreted in the first way (that אִחֻזַת is not construct). And you need not be surprised at the “thav” of אִחֻזַת although the word is not in the construct state, for we have similar cases in Scripture (Psa 60:13): “help against the foe,” and (Isa 51:21) “drunk, but not with wine.”

But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said to him, “Behold, you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man's wife.” GEN 20:3

28 They said, “We see plainly that the Lord has been with you. So we said, let there be a sworn pact between us, between you and us, and let us make a covenant with you.”

They said, “We see plainly”—We saw it in the case of your father and we see it in the case of yourself (Bereishit Rabbah 64:10).

Let there be a sworn pact between us, etc. means let the sworn pact that has existed between us since the days of your father be also between us and you.
