Go Part 3 (Gen 13:6-8)

6
so that the land could not support both of them dwelling together; for their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together,

So . . . could not support—It could not provide sufficient pasture for their cattle. The phrase is elliptical and a word must be supplied, for instance: so that the pasturage of the land could not support both of them.

6 Then Esau took his wives, his sons, his daughters, and all the members of his household, his livestock, all his beasts, and all his property that he had acquired in the land of Canaan. He went into a land away from his brother Jacob.

7 For their possessions were too great for them to dwell together. The land of their sojournings could not support them because of their livestock. GEN 36:6-7

17 and he thought to himself, “What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?”

18 And he said, “I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.” LUK 12:17-18

But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 1TI 6:9

7 and there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and the herdsmen of Lot's livestock. At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were dwelling in the land.

And there was strife because Lot’s herdsmen were wicked men and grazed their cattle in other people’s fields. Abram’s herdsmen rebuked them for this act of robbery, but they replied, “The land has been given to Abram, and since he has no son as heir, Lot will be his heir: consequently this is not robbery.” Scripture, however, states: “At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were dwelling in the land,” so that Abram was not yet entitled to possession (Bereishit Rabbah 41:5).

And the territory of the Canaanites extended from Sidon in the direction of Gerar as far as Gaza, and in the direction of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha. GEN 10:19

Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. GEN 12:6

When Abraham reproved Abimelech about a well of water that Abimelech's servants had seized, GEN 21:25

the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, “The water is ours.” So he called the name of the well Esek, because they contended with him. GEN 26:20

Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble on me by making me stink to the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites and the Perizzites. My numbers are few, and if they gather themselves against me and attack me, I shall be destroyed, both I and my household.” GEN 34:30

The shepherds came and drove them away, but Moses stood up and saved them, and watered their flock. EXO 2:17

For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. JAS 3:16

What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? JAS 4:1

Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation. 1PE 2:12

8 Then Abram said to Lot, “Let there be no strife between you and me, and between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, for we are kinsmen.

Kinsmen—Meaning relatives, and according to the Midrash Aggadah (Bereishit Rabbah 41:6), they resembled each other in their facial features.

Yevamot 17b:6

The Gemara objects on another count: Let the halakha derive the meaning of the term brotherhood from the term brotherhood from Lot, as it is written that Abraham said to Lot: “For we are brothers” (Gen 13:8). From here one could conclude that the word brothers means relatives and not necessarily brothers. The Gemara rejects this: It is more reasonable to derive from the children of Jacob, due to the fact that the word “brothers” is free in its context and is therefore available to be used in a verbal analogy: Since it could have written: We, your servants, are twelve children of our father, but instead it writes:Twelve brothers, the children of one man” (Gen 42:13), learn from here that this comes to render the word “brothers” free so that it may be allocated to another matter, i.e., the definition of brothers.
