Generations Part 3 (Gen 26:13-22)

13 and the man became rich, and gained more and more until he became very wealthy.

He became very wealthy—So that people used to say, “Rather the dung of Isaac’s mules than all Abimelech’s gold and silver” (Bereishit Rabbah 64:7).

The Lord has greatly blessed my master, and he has become great. He has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male servants and female servants, camels and donkeys. GEN 24:35

14 He had possessions of flocks and herds and many servants, so that the Philistines envied him.

And many servants means a great many things to do (i.e. great undertakings) O.F. ouvrene. The word עִבוֹדָה denotes one thing to be done whereas עִבֻדָּה denotes many things to be done.

And for her sake he dealt well with Abram; and he had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys, and camels. GEN 12:16

Now Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold. GEN 13:2

And his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the saying in mind. GEN 37:11

15 (Now the Philistines had stopped and filled with earth all the wells that his father's servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father.)

The Philistines had stopped, saying, “They may become a source of danger to us because of marauding troops that may invade us” (i.e., they may invade our country to obtain possession of the wells, or if they invade us for any other reason they will be able to find a supply of water) (Tosafot Sotah 10). The rendering of the Targum means “stopping” and we find it in the language of the Talmud (Pesachim 42a) “chokes (מְטַמְטֵם) the heart.”

16 And Abimelech said to Isaac, “Go away from us, for you are much mightier than we.”

And he said to his people, “Behold, the people of Israel are too many and too mighty for us.” EXO 1:9

18 And Isaac dug again the wells of water that had been dug in the days of Abraham his father, which the Philistines had stopped after the death of Abraham. And he gave them the names that his father had given them.

And Isaac dug again—Meaning the wells that had been dug in the days of Abraham his father, which the Philistines had stopped before Isaac left Gerar he once again dug.

Therefore that place was called Beersheba, because there both of them swore an oath. GEN 21:31

Nebo, and Baal-meon (their names were changed), and Sibmah. And they gave other names to the cities that they built. NUM 32:38

20 the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, “The water is ours.” So he called the name of the well Esek, because they contended with him.

Esek means contention.

Because they contended with him means they engaged with him about it with strife and contention.

Sanhedrin 111a:9

I said to Isaac: “Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and will bless you” (Gen 26:3). His servants sought water to drink and they did not find it until they started a quarrel, as it is stated: “The herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, ‘The water is ours’ ” (Gen 26:20), and he did not question my attributes.

When Abraham reproved Abimelech about a well of water that Abimelech's servants had seized, GEN 21:25

21 Then they dug another well, and they quarreled over that also, so he called its name Sitnah.

Sitnah Old French nuysemant; English hindrance.

22 And he moved from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. So he called its name Rehoboth, saying, “For now the Lord has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.”

I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make you into nations, and kings shall come from you. GEN 17:6

God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a company of peoples. GEN 28:3

The name of the second he called Ephraim, “For God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.” GEN 41:52

But the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them. EXO 1:7
